New Skills

Stephen May, psychotherapy and mentoring.

A big part of a successful experience when working with a therapist involves learning and practicing new tools, new skills.  Some of the skills that Stephen May can help you practice, include:

  1. Improving communication between parents and children (including adult children) – this sometimes involves “parenting” parents ie taking the lead in behaving like a well-adjusted adult.  Often involves learning to look after and heal the “hurt child” within yourself.
  2. Finding purpose & meaning in your life (in spite of external circumstances)
  3. Reframing your narrative – Addressing anxiety and/or depressionlearning to tell your life’s story in a way which is nurturing for yourself; allowing you to recover from past traumas and live with positivity and optimism.
  4. Policing flexible boundaries – learning the art of protecting yourself from others while sustaining respect for all.
  5. “Fighting Fair” – conflict is not a problem in partnerships and family – but we need to “fight fair” and that includes learning how best to invite reconnection and new expressions of intimacy and love.
  6. M.A.C.E – When you are emotionally attacked or abused, learn 4 quick steps to protect yourself and begin a pattern of HEALTHY communication.
  7. Meta-values – learn and practice the core values that help you discover and sustain the relationships and activities that you care for most.
  8. Acceptance through Compassion – forgiveness is not always easy (or necessarily advisable).  But learning to accept circumstances and poor behaviour (in others and in yourself) as part of the natural order of life (none of us is perfect) is a magical road to less anxiety, better connections, joy and meaning.
